One of the best skincare ingredients, hyaluronic acid (HA), is surprisingly unknown to many outside of the beauty industry. Here is an overview of key facts and benefits of HA - and the reasons why you should consider adding this "magical" skin-native ingredient to your daily skincare routine.
What is Hyaluronic Acid (HA)?
Youthful skin looks and feels great mainly due to its high content of water. Day-to-day external stressors, such as UV exposure, plus just the normal ageing process lead to loss of moisture. And the key molecule responsible for retaining water in our skin is hyaluronic acid (HA).
Hyaluronan or hyaluronic acid (HA) is a glycosaminoglycan (GAG) - sugar-like substance - that has a unique capacity to bind and retain water molecules. It lives between cells, playing a vital role in creating structure for healthy cellular functioning.
While HA is present in many parts of our body, skin HA accounts for most of 50% of total body HA and is essential for skin hydration. Most of the skin HA is found in the dermis, the thickest part of the skin, so it should not be surprising that this skin layer provides strength and flexibility to the skin.
Hyaluronic acid remains in the skin for just 24 hours, so it's produced by our body daily. With age, especially after 50 the production decreases significantly which leads to drier, less elastic skin. The good news is we can add HA to our skin by using skincare products that contain hyaluronic acid/sodium hyaluronate.
So why should I use products with HA?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here are 3 main reason why you need HA in your skincare routine:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Hyaluronic acid attracts 💧 from lower skin layers and the air outside and captures it in our skin. This means less fine lines and healthier, fresher appearance
- HA is a known factor in repairing skin damage, for example from acne or UV exposure. Using HA-rich skincare products promotes scar healing and helps reduce inflammation. This means less skin damage and faster skin healing.
- By drawing more water to outer skin layers, HA helps “flush out” toxins and other impurities. As a result your skin is healthier, more radiant and with a more even complexion. ⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
An important fact to remember: As hyaluronic acid lives in our skin just for 24 hours, daily dosage is required if you are keen to see the benefits of using HA.
