Also called Sangre de Drago, dragon’s blood is a resin, sap, extracted from a tree indigenous to South America – Croton lechleri. As this tree is commonly referred to as “dragon tree” and its sap has a vibrant deep red 🩸 colour, the red resin received the name of Dragon’s Blood.
When the sap is rubbed onto skin, it forms a thin layer, like a very fine additional skin membrane. Dragon’s blood is naturally rich in phenolic antioxidants that prevent damage to DNA from free radicals. These phenolic compounds have also been found to strengthen the immune system and makes cells more resistant to cancer.
Anti-inflammatory properties of Dragon’s Blood have been well-researched. Additionally, the sap contains a compound called proanthocyanidin that repairs collagen, and taspine, a known tissue-healing agent. The combination of these naturally-occurring compounds makes Dragon’s Blood and amazing skincare ingredient, especially great for sensitive, inflamed and mature skin.
